January 24, 2019 – Demco Automation was one of three local manufacturers interviewed for an article that highlights how manufacturers take advantage of working with students through internships, cooperative education, and other hands-on career experiences.

Arguably the best way to prepare someone to enter the manufacturing field is through early training in the workforce. That can come in the form of an internship, cooperative education program, pre-apprenticeship or apprenticeship. These programs provide students with the chance to use the skills they learned at a career and technical school or community college under the direction and guidance of a mentor.
We spoke with three local manufacturers taking advantage of these programs to learn about their experiences, and how the programs benefit them as well as the students…

Demco Automation Hosts 2018 Manufacturing Day Event
On October 5, 2018, Demco Automation is hosting multiple Manufacturing Day events celebrating advanced manufacturing. The event invited community members including groups such as students, educators and others to learn about the design and construction of robotics and automation. Attendees saw videos, robots in action, and automated equipment as it is used in advanced manufacturing facilities throughout the United States.
Manufacturing Day is a national effort started in 2012 to promote awareness of manufacturing and its contributions to a 21st century society. In 2016, more than quarter million students and over half a million participants were on-hand to learn about manufacturing, technology, career options, and the overall benefits of the manufacturing sector to our communities and economy.

Demco Automation is part of Inaugural SkillsUSA Signing Day Event
May 11, 2018 LEHIGH VALLEY – SkillsUSA, a partnership of industry, educators, and students to promote a skilled workforce, organized the first “Signing Day” event for the five area Technical Schools in Lehigh Valley District 11. The event was held to recognize technical school students that are moving on to a technical careers, college, or military service after graduation.
Demco Automation was proud to be a part of this event by preparing to hire current Machining Technologies Co-Op student Jeremy Howard when he completes his education at Lehigh Career & Technical Institute (LCTI) and Southern Lehigh High School in June.
“During his time working with us this year as a Machining Co-Op Student, Jeremy has been putting the skills learned from LCTI to good use machining and assembling key components for our robotic and automated systems, and we are looking forward to him starting on a full-time basis starting this summer.” says Stephen Maund, President & CEO of Demco Automation. “Partnership with technical education is an important company objective. It is our responsibility as a business community to ensure our regional workforce is ready to meet the needs of a technology-based economy.”

With Continued Growth, Demco Automation Announces New Facility
January 7, 2017 – Demco Automation has finalized agreements and is in the final phases of completing construction of a new facility. The larger site will support its continued growth as a leading automated systems supplier.
The 35,000-square-foot climate-controlled facility includes expanded manufacturing assembly bays, additional engineering offices, and lab space to support advanced process development activities.
“With our emphasis on developing highly customized processes coupled with the increased global demand for automation and robotics, we have seen consistent double digit annual growth this decade,” said Stephen Maund, President and CEO. “because of this, we are in a situation where a larger facility is needed.”
The increase in assembly and integration areas provide flex space for bigger systems without reconfiguring the manufacturing floor. Maund added, “Our business has expanded in recent years to include larger production lines as well as our existing offerings of smaller scale systems for medical device and other industry sectors.”
“Additions to engineering, applications, and operations support over the past few years filled our office space with no room for expansion in the existing facility.” Maund continued. Current plans are to complete the move by February, 2017.

And it wouldn’t be long before the two would be connected – the former as a manufacturing business incubator, and the latter as an incubator program client.

Scalable Automation a Path to Turnkey Success

The world of custom automation used in electronics and other industries is a game of which direction to proceed — user-operated benchtop stations, or full turnkey systems. By creating a scalable automation strategy from the beginning, equipment reuse, risk reduction, and incremental implementation can be realized. By approaching an automation strategy in an incremental way, benefits such as the opportunity to prove risky or untested processes before “going all in” on a full turnkey system, a reduction in initial capital outlay at the beginning of a program, and the quick launch of critical processes for production are gained.
Before starting a custom automation project, be sure to do the homework and plan obsolescence out of the strategy. Use the principles of modularity, scalability and flexibility to create a reconfigurable automation system for the production process. In the end, it can extend budget dollars and increase the longevity of equipment in a competitive global marketplace.

Over a 10 week period, the candidates compete in honor of children who are local blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year, raising funds for LLS blood cancer research.
